The Towns of Zinder and Bondoukou

Bondoukou and Zinder are vibrant multi-ethnic towns. Local peoples as well as peoples who have immigrated to these towns over the last three hundred years have shaped the distinctive histories of these communities. Perhaps the most significant influence has come from Muslim peoples, specifically the Dyula in Bondoukou and the Hausa in Zinder, who have introduced both the religion and the culture of Islam. These historical and contemporary views of Bondoukou and Zinder convey the character of these communities and the people who live in them. As you look at these images consider the nature of the architecture, the kinds of clothes people are wearing and the various activities in which people are engaged.
