An mbaula is a cooking pot, which this character wears on his head between many horns. He is a witch, in the form of a suitor who is trying to win the favor of a married woman, by offering treats (corn popped in his pot) to her family. In secret, he is aiming to poison her husband. Horns in gule wamkulu depict power, which may be used for good or bad.
