Mkango

Mkango is the lion. This structure is one of the images of the chief, reflecting his role as
protector of the moral code, the mwambo, and his authority in the village. Danced by
two men, the lion makes a strong entry to the bwalo, surging forwards and backwards,
and rotating end-to-end. Structures are becoming rarer as people have less time to
devote to non-remunerative community activities such as making the characters of gule
wamkulu.
