This blanket was made in the 1890's by a member of the North Carolina
Haliwa-Saponi tribe. The Haliwa-Saponi's are native to north-central
North Carolina, (near Hollister). The quilt was purchased from the
granddaughter of the maker. She related that it is made of feed
sacks that were softened by soaking in lye, and that the colors
were produced using berries and other plant products. The family
name (Barefoot) was written on the backside.
