There is a label on the quilt that indicates it was loaned at some
point to either a museum, an historical society, or other civic
group for an exhibition. The label reads: "Loaned by the Misses
Du Bois, 49 Washington Ave. Quilt belonging to Rachel Hardenberg
Married in 1781 to Captain Matthew Jansen."
Rachel Hardenberg was the niece of Johannes G. Hardenberg (1731-1812)
who settled in the Hudson Valley. Objects from his home have been
collected by the Winterthur
Museum. Captain Matthew Jansen belonged to the Ulster County
Militia [New York] who fought at different periods from October
25, 1775 until 1782 in the Revolutionary War. They had seven children
and belonged to the Dutch Reformed Church.
