Expanding, caring for and using the collections all demand substantial underwriting. While Michigan State University provides the basic space and utilities for the collections and related activities, the majority of the additional costs of caring for and using the collections must be raised through grants and donations.
Special annual support is also provided through the Michigan Council for
Arts and Cultural Affairs, Country
Stitches/Adopt-A-Quilt Program, the Kitty Clark Cole Endowment, Michigan
Quilt Project Endowment, royalties from
RJR fabric lines and C&T
Publishing collaborative publications, the Anne Longman Endowment,
and the generous contributions of many individuals and groups.
This activity is part of the Michigan Traditional Arts Program (MTAP) at the Michigan State University Museum which promotes awareness, appreciation, and support for Michigan's traditional cultural resources through research, education, and public service. Operational support for MTAP is provided in part by Michigan State University, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, and the Michigan State University Extension.
Michigan State University Museum is a 501(c)3 organization. MSU employees
may contribute directly through payroll deduction. Contributions may also
be eligible for some employee corporate matching-gift programs. Individuals
and groups interested in supporting the activities of the Great Lakes
Quilt Center can find out more by contacting Annie James, MSU Museum Development
Officer @ email: jamesan@msu.edu

Country Stitches/Adopt-A-Quilt Program

Country Stitches provided a $5,000 contribution in
1999 to initiate this program. We have had a number of individuals and
groups who have donated funds to adopt a quilt in the MSU Museum collection.
Each contribution of $50.00 helps underwrite the costs of maintaining
one quilt for one year. With almost 700 quilts in the collection, these
funds help cover the costs of staffing, acid-free materials, and housing
units necessary not only for the professional care of the collection but
also to provide access to the collection through scheduled visits, exhibitions,
and educational programs.
