Baking Rocks: Exploring Earth Science with Cake!

Experiment along in this virtual demonstration with MSU Museum’s Education Assistant Nick VanAcker.

Who knew the earth could be this delicious? In this program, families will work together to explore 3 earth science activities about meteorites, fossils, and the layers of the earth – using ingredients found in your kitchen! When combined, these activities create a yummy lava cake for your family to enjoy!

If you want to follow along, this is the list of supplies:
1 cup all-purpose flour
¾ cup sugar
6 tablespoons baking cocoa (divided into 2 tbsp and 4 tbsp)
¼ teaspoon salt
½ cup milk
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 ¾ cups hot water

Other materials:
Nuts (whole walnuts or pecans work well)
In case of a nut allergy, hard candies can also be used.
Medium mixing bowl
9 in square baking pan
Measuring cups and spoons
Paper plate
Spoon/Rubber Spatula
