Fins to Limbs: How Our Ancestors Left the Water and Came Onto Land

Come to the MSU Museum to touch some fossil casts, and explore important fossil evidence “up close and personal” during the presentation. The fossil record from between 350 to 400 million years ago includes a series of fossil discoveries that show how our fish ancestors transformed their fins into limbs! These ancestors evolved features that enabled the early tetrapods (the terrestrial vertebrates), or four-footed creatures, to leave the water and begin to explore land environments. This program includes the famous transitional form Tiktaalik, to demonstrate the major steps in this evolutionary story using the actual physical evidence. Come learn and explore!
